Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is wonderbefore? A screen-free audio storytelling podcast designed to help kids practice imagination. Each episode invites children into a quiet, contemplative story where they become the protagonist.
Who is it for? Children ages 3–8, and the parents who are tired of handing over a screen every time there's a boring moment.
Is this a sleep podcast? No. wonderbefore stories live in the space between day and dream. They're designed for awake, quiet moments. Car rides, waiting rooms, rest time, wind-down before dinner.
Is it educational? Not in the flashcards-and-facts way. These stories build imagination, emotional awareness, and the ability to sit with open-ended wondering. Skills that matter, just not the kind you can quiz.
-
What is "productive boredom"? It's what happens when kids aren't entertained or educated, just given space. Their minds wander, make connections, and create. wonderbefore gives that space a gentle shape without filling it up.
What are the Four Acts of Imagination? Our storytelling framework. Each story focuses on one:
Feeling — emotional literacy and noticing inner experiences
Making — creative agency and building something from nothing
Listening — mindful presence and attention to the world
Wondering — curiosity, awe, and the big open questions
How is this different from other kids' podcasts? Most kids' audio is entertainment (jokes, adventures, characters) or education (lessons, facts, quizzes). wonderbefore is neither. We're not trying to capture attention. We're trying to release it.

Is this based on research? Yes. Our approach draws on neuroscience research about the Default Mode Network, the brain system that activates during rest, daydreaming, and self-reflection. It's linked to creativity, emotional processing, and sense of self.
Are you scientists? No. We're storytellers who translate research into practice. We don't claim clinical expertise. We create content informed by science and designed by people who understand how stories work.
Where can I learn more about the research? We write about the science behind wonderbefore on our blog, with links to studies and researchers whose work informs our approach.

When should my child listen? Anytime they'd otherwise be bored or reaching for a screen. Car rides, quiet time, waiting at appointments, rest time after lunch, wind-down before dinner.
How long are episodes? Around 10–15 minutes — long enough to settle in, short enough for real life.
Can my child listen alone? Yes. The stories are designed for independent listening. You can also listen together if you'd like.
Do they need to do anything while listening? Nope. No activities required. They can sit, lie down, look out the window, or close their eyes. The only instruction is to imagine.
What if my child doesn't "get it" or gets wiggly? That's normal. Imagination is a practice, not a performance. Some kids settle in immediately; others take a few listens. There's no wrong way to wonder.
